Be more prepared for college and beyond

The classroom can give you the academic skills you need to be successful, but extracurricular activities can give you the life skills you need to be successful – skills such as grit, creativity, teamwork, responsibility, and composure. That’s why I encourage you, if you haven’t already, to join a club, after school activity, or organization. And take advantage of them! You’ll be thankful you did in the end.
Here’s more information on how to make extracurriculars count. And please, come see me if you need help getting connected to one or have further questions.

Find the best-fit college

The college application process will be here before you know it, and although it’s an exciting time, it can also be stressful. To help reduce some of that stress, you should focus your energy only on the schools you know you want to attend. A great way to find those select few is to go on campus visits. As spring approaches, my advice is to schedule a few. Use this great resource library that will walk you through:
Why visiting colleges is important
The 9 activities students should do on a campus visit
What to bring to a campus visit
How to decide if that visited college is a good fit
And please schedule a visit with me if you need further help or have questions.

Find out what you’ll actually be paying for college

As you start to hear back from colleges, it’s a good time to determine how much you’ll actually be paying for college. There are a lot of factors to consider – tuition and fees, along with scholarships, grants, loans, and likely much more. On top of that, each school you’re accepted into could have a different way of defining cost.
To help with this, I’ve found this interactive tool that has made determining costs easier. I encourage you to use it as you weigh and compare your college options.
Please, come see me if you would like more help or have further questions.

March Senior Lunch

The focus of the senior lunch on Wednesday, March 7 will be on finding a church while in college or when starting in a first career. I will be sharing Campus Ministry Link which is a great website that attempts to link college students to local churches across the nation. Since it's been a long while since I was in college I have asked Miss Rader, Miss Mitchell, and Pastor Nate to join us for lunch and they will be sharing their experiences in serving in churches during college and their first jobs.

Pre-ACT Testing

The 10th grade will be taking the Pre-ACT test on Friday 3/9 during the morning. This is their first opportunity to be exposed to the formal testing environment that they will need to be comfortable with for the ACT test in the future. The Pre-Act will give us a glimpse into our student's academic strengths and weakness and will help to guide them in choosing classes as well as test preparation strategies.

Career Fieldtrip

The juniors and seniors are heading to visit North Star BlueScope Steel LLC on Thursday, March 8.  This trip will expose our students to an enormous factory and to hear about careers that are available direct from high school. North Star Steel is hosting a tour, career panel, and providing our lunch. Should be a great field trip for students as they explore their career options after high school.

ACT Test

Last week our junior class took the state-funded ACT test. The state of Ohio department of education (ODE) has not yet set the benchmark score students will need to achieve to meet the high school graduation requirements. I will be closely monitoring for developments coming from ODE and will let everyone know just as soon as possible. Test results take 6 -8 weeks to come back. Our juniors have been studying for the ACT since August and we know they were well prepared for this important test.

Office Hours

In an effort to increase my accessibility to our MCA families I will be available for drop-in office hours weekly on Wednesdays from 4:30-6:30 pm. Come early for Monclova Road Baptist Church evening services and I will be in my office waiting to help you and your student.

NEAP Testing

Our 8th-grade class recently participated in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NEAP), widely known as The Nation's Report Card. The test covered history and civics, the test is used to measure the effectiveness of private schools across the nation.  The testing team commented that our students were the most respectful and brightest group that they had work within all their year of traveling and administering the test. Great testimony 8th grade!

Beta Club Inductions

Beta Club at Monclova Christian is now 11 students stronger as we inducted new members on 2/21. National Beta Club is an academic honor and service organization.  Our members logged 400 hours of service in the first semester of the school year! That is quite an accomplishment! With 32 members I expect that we will double that number by the end of the school year.

College Credit Plus

On February 8 a representative from Ohio Christian University joined us in an informational meeting regarding college credit plus for the 2018/2019 academic year. 15 families are getting involved the program. The first deadline for participation is to file with the Ohio Department of Education a letter of intent to participate by April 1.  Please contact me today if you need assistance with getting started.
